Concussions 101

As you may know, concussions has become a hot topic in the news recently. This is especially true if you play or has a kid that plays contact sports. Although it is a hot-button term being thrown around, from what I hear around the rinks, a lot of people still do not know the basics behind a concussion or how they are treated. Dr. Mike Evans is founder of the Health Design Lab at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto, and a staff physician at St. Michael's Hospital. He has put together a short 5 minute video going over the basics of a concussion and its treatment.

Chiropractic & the NHL

If you haven't heard already, chiropractic has been all over the news lately since the return of Sidney Crosby to the NHL. His return from a debilitating concussion has been one of the most talked about subjects, but the reason for his return has become even more of a discussion topic. Check out this article in Maclean's on how the #1 player on the planet was helped by a chiropractor.

Two win weekend puts the Patriots in 2nd place

The Toronto Lakeshore Patriot had another strong weekend coming away with two much needed wins to move the squad into second place behind St. Mike's. Both wins follow a poor showing on Monday where the team was outplayed for a large majority of the 60 minutes in a loss to Vaughan. With the wins, the Patriots have now won 5 of their last 6 and are playing more consistent hockey.

On Friday night, the Patriots travelled to St. Michael's arena to take on their rival, the St. Mike's Buzzers. St. Mike's would build a 3-1 second period lead only to have the Patriots cut the deficit to one goal at the end of 40 minutes. Daniel Tedesco scored the late tying marker with just under a minute remaining to knot the game at three. Nick Perruccio opened the scoring on a howitzer of slap shot and Alex D'Oliveira added the other Patriot goal. The game would eventually go to a shootout, but only after James Ryan would send an overtime shot off the crossbar. In the shootout, Joseph Pianta would stand tall stopping the first four St. Mike's shooters before Brandon Willett would score on the Patriots fourth attempt to complete the comeback.

On Saturday night, the Patriots hosted the North York Rangers and came away with a 6-3 victory. Daniel Tedesco would continue his hot streak opening the scoring midway through the first period. North York would tie the game 5 minutes later to send both teams to the dressing room tied at one a piece. In the second, North York would take a 2-1 lead but then run into penalty trouble allowing the Patriots to score two quick powerplay goals by James De Haas and Tedesco's second of the game. James Ryan would then score a shorthanded marker to put the Patriots up 4-2. North York would get one back before the end of the second on a 5-3 powerplay of their own. Doug Bonar would score quickly in the third and add another marker later to give the Patriots a solid 6-3 lead and the two points.

The Patriots travel to Peterborough on Tuesday and host Vaughan on Friday night at 8pm at the MasterCard Centre.

Patriots off to a strong start!!

Through 5 games, the Upper Canada Patriots are sitting with a 4-1 record and are currently ranked 14th in the country.  This has been a big turnaround from last year, as last year's team finished with a record of 15-31-0-4.  Hopefully this is only the tip of the iceberg as the team still has much room to grow and mature as a group.

Dr. Nabeta moves to junior A hockey

For the 2010-11 hockey season, I have followed my coaching team to the junior A level and have joined the Upper Canada Patriots of Ontario Junior Hockey League.  Our home arena will be the new Mastercard Centre (aka the new Lakeshore Lions arena) and our home night is every Friday.  Here is a link to our home page.  The team is very young and very fast, and is hoping to use the same strategies that powered the Mississauga Reps with this new squad of young talent.

Congratulations to the Mississauga Reps Midget AAA team...#2 in Canada!!

Over the week of April 19 - 26, I was lucky enough to travel with the Mississauga hockey team to Levis, Quebec for the Telus Cup National Midget AAA Championships.  Not many players, coaches, trainers, or even chiropractors can say they've made it there so just qualifying was quite an honour.  The week was long, busy, eventful, fun, and dramatic.  In the end, bad luck and injuries proved to be our demise and the team fell 1 goal short in the final game.  It sucks to lose but the boys didn't leave anything behind and being #2 in a hockey crazed country is pretty damn impressive.  Again, it was honour to be a part of the team and I couldn't be more proud of all of them.  Thanks for the great season and all the memories, guys!
